“Today when you see all these 95 to 100 point scores, I think it’s really confusing to people,” says Herdaheem. “As a critic, the number one thing that I hear from wineries and retailers is that they love all the high scores, but they want the scores to be higher and easier to understand.”
That’s where 101 Point Wines comes in. All wines on the site will receive one of two scores, either 100 or 101 points.
“If I like the wine, it’s 100 points. If I really like it, it’s 101,” says Herdaheem. “The industry has been trending toward higher and higher scores for a while now. I’m just taking it to its logical conclusion.”
Herdaheem launched the site with a long list of 100 point scores, and even a few 101 points wines. “I never thought when I launched my new site I’d be giving out top scores to so many wines, but I wanted to come out strong and get the word out,” Herdaheem says.
With wineries and retailers often promoting the highest score a wine receives regardless of where it comes from, Herdaheem expects 101 Point Wines to quickly become the world’s most frequently cited source for wine reviews.
“What could be higher than 101 points?” Herdaheem asks.
Herdaheem’s long list of wine credentials only adds to the site’s credibility. Herdaheem is an MS, MW, CSW, CS, FWS, IWS, SWS, Bourgogne ML, Bordeaux ML, Champagne ML, and Loire ML.
“When he walks onto the service floor, he’s got more pins than a five star general, but he’s dressed like a Wall Street broker,” says Nod Gonnasay, general manager at Five Star Food, where Herdaheem works as wine director. “Guests don’t know whether to salute him or ask for a stock tip. Some do both.”
Gonnasay says Herdaheem’s credentials are integral to his success. “Most people don’t know what any of his pins mean, but along with his dapper dress, they intimidate people. That helps him sell more wine. I think 101 Point Wines will too.”
In addition to its unique rating system, 101 Point Wines also uses a game-changing revenue model. While most wine review sites are bound to subscriptions or advertising, 101 Point Wines borrows a page from medal competitions: All revenue will come exclusively from submission fees.
“It’s important everyone know that I will not be beholden to subscribers or advertisers at 101 Point Wines,” states Herdaheem. "Medal competitions have long accepted this ethical compromise in the interest of making money. I'm simply following their lead." Submission fees will range from 100 to 101 USD. 101 Point Wine medallions will also be available for an additional charge.
